First Arab CP Workshop

 

The First Arab Workshop on Cleaner Production was held in Amman between the 4th and 6th of April 2006. The Workshop was organized by the Royal Scientific Society (RSS) in cooperation with the University of Applied Sciences in Basel (FHBB) and Sustainable Business Associates (SBA) with the support of the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (seco). The Opening session was held under the patronage and with the participation of H.E. Khalid Irani, Jordanian Minister of Environment.

 

Participants from Arab countries in the Middle East such as Maghreb, Egypt, Lebanon and other countries from the gulf have attended this workshop and they were willing to apply cleaner production to improve the eco-performance of business and industry.

 

Senior Swiss and Jordanian experts presented concepts, tools and case studies to illustrate the results and benefits of applying Cleaner Production (CP). Main topics included:

  • Quick Scan and CP potential
  • Material Flow Analysis
  • Energy Flow Analysis
  • CP options identification
  • Technical and financial evaluation
  • Performance Indicators, Action Planning, Benchmarking and Monitoring

 

Additionally tools and international funding mechanisms for enhancing the application of CP were presented, namely:

  • CP Excellence Award
  • Clean Development Mechanism
  • Environmental Economics
 

The Workshop has also emphasized on forming a Regional Arab Network to foster application of Cleaner Production in the Middle East and North Africa.
