The CP Excellence aims at helping the implementation and improvement of a comprehensive CP System which includes the three dimensions of Sustainable Development : Environmental aspects, Social issues and Economic efficiency.
The CP Unit at the Environmental Research Centre (ERC) in the Royal Scientific Society (RSS) together with Sustainable Business Associates (SBA) in Switzerland are working on developing and designing a CP Excellence Model Award scheme. This Award Programme will not only reward and recognise top performing CP Systems, but will also assist applicants to better understand and implement the CP Excellence Model.
Cleaner Production Excellence Model Award is an incentive tool that guarantees International recognition for companies in Jordan thus enabling them to gain access to national and international markets in a competitive and a sustainable manner.
CP Excellence Model is inspired from an internationally recognised scheme the EFQM Model (European Foundation for Quality Management) and on the principles and elements of Environmental Management Systems and CP, which are worldwide implemented and recognised.
The CP Excellence Model was tested in two companies in Jordan in 2004/2005, and it is expected to be implemented during the year 2006.

The CP Excellence Criteria & benefits
The CP Excellence is a framework based on eight Criteria Five of these are “Enablers” 🙁 CP Diagnosis, CP Policy, CP Strategy, CP Implementation, Monitoring & Measuring) which cover what an organisation does, and the other three are “Results” : (Economic Results, Environmental Results and Social Responsibility Results ), which cover what an organisation achieves. “Enablers” cause “Results” and are improved using feedback from “Results”.
See Fig (1) The Cleaner Production Excellence Model
The Figure above, represent the Criteria that have to be met in order to progress towards Sustainable Development and obtain the CP Excellence Award.
major Benefits of CP Excellence Award
All applicants participating in the CP Award Programme, will obtain comprehensive, confidential and independent assessment of their CP Systems by technical experts (Examiners); applicants will also receive valuable feedback for enhancing and improving their environmental, economic and social performance.
Cleaner Production Excellence Model and Award are both powerful tools that guarantees International recognition for companies in Jordan thus enabling them to gain access to national and international markets in a competitive and a sustainable manner.
Winners will receive a trophy or a certificate during a special public ceremony. They will be recognised as remarkable models and may publicize and advertise their Award. Consequently, winners will be able to prove to stakeholders (customers, potential customers, suppliers, neighbours, society in general) that they excel in environmental, economic and social responsibility issues and that they will have the possibility to access new international markets.
CP Award Organizational Structure
All activities related to the implementation, management and improvement of the CP Award Programme demand the establishment of an adequate Organisational Structure. In the case of the CP Excellence Award in Jordan, a Steering Committee, an Administration Body and Examiners will compose such Organisational Structure. The Steering Committee (formed by governmental institutions, two concerned research centres from RSS, two or three prominent and proactive companies, chambers of industry and one NGO) will supervise the process and will have the final decision on granting the Award. The Administration Body (formed by JISM) will execute the implementation, supervision, training and all activities related to the CP Excellence Award’s administration. Finally, Examiners (staff of the RSS Cleaner Production Unit) will be in charge of the applications assessment.

Work shops & Interviews
In order to introduce the CP Excellence Model and Award and to obtain detailed feedback from the different Jordanian stakeholders several workshops and interviews were carried out.
Professionals from various backgrounds attended this work shop : Government (Ministry of the Environment, Ministry of Industry, Jordan Institution for Standards and Metrology (JISM), Jordan Export Development and Commercial Centres Corporation, Jordan Investment Board); Industry (dairy, cosmetics, paints, electro-plating, aluminium); NGOs (Friends of the Environment), and Research Centres from the Royal Scientific Society.
Both workshop attendants and stakeholders interviewed agreed that the CP Excellence Model and Award is a very good tool for implementing CP system in companies and is an attractive approach for moving towards sustainable development.
